Sylvain, a warning... I also ran into similar results with PROLIFIC chips sets but in ALL cases even if I got some to work with WIN7, they were unstable at best and ALL showed random failure running HRD specially if interfacing the CAT protion of the radio...
I highly recommend using FTDI chip set or onboard serial ports instead...

If you are using a laptop as I am (Lenovo t510 + Windows 7 (32-bit)), you can also use an ExpressCard-to-serial adapter. This slides into the computer's ExpressCard slot. Have had no problems with anything requiring a serial connection.

I agree, desktop users can also use serial ports based on PCI-Epress slot based multiple serial port cards (mine have 6 serial ports)
these options and usb based converters using FTDI chip sets will works fine, make certain mfg has upto date drivers many of them dont have win7 x64 drivers

the answer is simple, do not use any prolific chips set adapters there are plenty of documented examples of lock ups with Prolific chip sets.
these were documented with XP, Win7 32 and Win7 64bit, yes there were issues with REAL prolific chips sets with Win7 that were resolved with the new drivers BUT... not all were specially with very high trough put applications like HRD still are unstable using Prolific chip sets, THUS DONT USE Prolific...
FTDI have been and still are rock solid... I have been testing multiple different types of adapters and found multiples issues with real and counterfit (yes there are counterfit prolific that are causing even more prolems...) even with latest drivers from prolific... while FTDI have always worked 100%...
Thus stick with FTDI, one place where they are available is www.easy-control-rotor.com from Rene DF9GR...

I'm only referencing Windows 7 64x.
As for the ftdi i agree, those are the only ones i have been purchasing recently, but i do have some prolific ones too, and, on the pc where i had blue screen problems while using hrd on a prolific device/port, i can say that with the latest driver installed as per the instruction i no longer have that pc crashing. Another ham also fixed his problems with hrd on his laptop connected to his ts2000. Mine works perfectly now on my ic-7800 at the same time as 2 other ports are in used on that same pc (the 2 other ports are on ftdi ports.).
So, as long has it works... If you have existing prolific it's worth a try, else, ftdi is there at a store near you.

Hi everyone
If you use Belkin F6U409 USB to serial adapteur with Windows 7-64 Bit, it WILL NOT Work. YOU MUST USE Belkin USB to serial adapteur number F5U257. This one will work fine.
The F6U409 will work only with 32 bit series.

I only had mild problems with my Prolific chipset USB-RS232 adapter cable. An occasional dropped connection, or a missed frequency if I was twirling the dial. It was 99% reliable, in trouble shooting another issue, I replace my adapter cable with a Valley FTDI chipset and my was it nice. No driver to hunt down and install, Windows 7 automatically pulled in the driver for it and the functioning appears faster and 100% reliable so far.

Thanks Amadeo for the nice writeup! I followed your procedures.
Well that site is down but I did google the filename and grabbed a copy of it. After the install, it's reporting the version number is alittle higher 2.1.30.193
Have HRD running so we'll see if it freezes!

I did just order a FTDI Icom cat cable off amazon which says it's x64 compatible.
